In October 2008 my uncle (mom's brother) was diagnosed with kidney cancer. Fortunately he was diagnosed soon enough that they were able to do surgery to remove the kidney and the cancer. Despite some pretty serious complications from surgery he pulled through. He had some kind of spot on his other kidney that they determined at the time wasn't malignant, but said that they would need to monitor it for any changes.
A new problem arose about 8 weeks into his recovery from his surgery, him being the man (thus a terrible patient) that he is he began doing too much too soon. He developed a hernia on his stomach at the incision site. For the past year the hernia grew and grew until it literally looked as though my uncle was nine months pregnant!
The wonderful doctors that we have here in So Cal bounced him around from doctor to doctor, doing this test and that, waiting for approval after approval. This was getting him nowhere.
In late December 2009 he and his estranged girlfriend reconciled and decided to move back to Tennessee where her parents lived to make a fresh start. He just sent me a message yesterday saying that his health insurance out there was finally in place and that he had an appointment today.
Today I got a call from my grandma stating that things weren't looking too good for him. He has some kind of bump on his back that the doctor said could either be a "water tumor" (I dunno just repeating what I was told) that is nothing, or it could be that the mass on the remaining kidney had grown. This would be very bad. Also the doctor was disgusted that uncle was let go for so long with the giant hernia and is supposed to be scheduling him for surgery next week.
With the 1 year anniversary of my mom's passing fast approaching I am very worried for my uncle and the rest of my family that a) the tumor will have turned malignant and/or b) surgery will not go well the way it did last time and he wont make it through.
This really sucks. I don't dually say this but I'm asking any and everyone to pray for my uncle and our family, we could really use it right now.
